November 2022 Reading Recommendations for Kids by Fran Joyce

For our younger readers, I’ve selected books pertaining to fall, November, Thanksgiving, and gratitude.

The books I selected for older readers focus on the challenges associated with growing up, social anxiety and trying to fit in or stand out, and the unexpected help that’s out there if we are brave enough to look.

It’s an eclectic mix for this busy time of year.

Duck and Goose Find a Pumpkin by Tad Mills – Duck and Goose are hunting for a big, beautiful pumpkin. Will they find it in the apple orchard, a leaf pile, or a hollow log? Where should they look? For ages 1-3

I Spy with My Little Eye Autumn by AN Books MA- A fun fall activity book for toddlers and preschoolers with an alphabet learning activity and fun guessing game. For ages 2-5

In November by Cynthia Rylant – Rylant describes the coming of winter, how the animals prepare, and how people gather together to count their blessings. For ages 3-7

How to Catch a Turkey by Adam Wallace – A turkey is running loose at school before the big Thanksgiving play. Can the students find it and save the day? No turkeys are harmed or eaten in this book which combines STEAM concepts to build the turkey traps. For ages 4-8

Gratitude is My Superpower by Alicia Ortega – Betsy learns that happiness is made up of a series of simple things, big and small with the help of a magic stone. What happens when she loses the stone? Kids will learn about gratitude, helping others, and appreciating the help they receive as Betsy learns she has always had the power to be happy. For ages 5-10

The Wild Robot by Peter Brown – When Roz the Robot opens her eyes she finds herself stranded on a wild remote island. She faces a violent storm and a bear attack, but can she adapt to her surroundings and survive in this hostile environment?  For ages 7-10

Wish by Barbara O’Connor – Charlie has been making the same wish every day since fourth grade. When she’s sent to live with family she hardly knows in the Blue Ridge Mountains, Charlie begins to doubt her wish will ever come true. When she finds a stray dog, and befriends a boy in her neighborhood, Charlie begins to settle into her knew life and learns the wish she has been making might not be what she really wants. For ages 8-11

Middle School: The Worst Years of My Life by James Patterson and Chris Tebbetts – Rafe has his share of problems at home, so he’s anxious to make a great impression on his classmates. With the help of his friend, Leonardo, Rafe sets out to break every one of his new school’s oppressive rules, but when his actions begin to catch up with him, Rafe must decide if winning is all that matters or if he’s ready to face the bullies and the real problems in his life. For ages 9-12

The Miscalculations of Lightning Girl by Stacy McAnulty – Lucy Callahan’s life was changed forever when she was struck by lightning and becomes a super genius. Homeschooled until 7th grade, Lucy is ready for college, but her grandmother insists she must master the social skills of a 7th grader before she can go to college. Can she make a friend, participate in one school activity, and read a book that’s not a textbook?  For ages 9-12

Shadow Jumper by J.M. Forster – Jack was born with a rare condition that prevents him from being in the sun. He must remain inside or face the risk of severely damaging his skin. He becomes a shadow jumper jumping between rooftops at dusk to feel alive. When his condition worsens, only his missing scientist father can help.
