May 2023 "What's in a Word?" by Fran Joyce

In honor of Mystery Month, we’ve selected ten mysterious words to set the tone for any mystery.

We have words for villains and their behaviors (especially those mind games they like to play), spooky words for when things go “bump in the night,” and words to describe the perfect scary setting.

How many of these words have you come across in your favorite mystery thrillers?

Clandestine (adjective) – Activities performed in secret for the purposes of deception or subversion.

Eldritch (adjective) – eerie, weird, or spooky.

Iniquitous (adjective) – injustice, sinfulness, or wickedness.

Nebulous (adjective) – hazy, indistinct, confused, or vague.

Nefarious (adjective) – villainous, evil, or wicked.

Obfuscate (verb) – to deliberately confuse, muddle facts, bewilder, or deceive.

Penetralia (noun) – the innermost parts of a place or thing; the most private, secret matters, or hidden recesses of something.

Recondite (adjective) – Difficult to understand or comprehend, vague or obscure in meaning, or hidden from sight, concealed.

Revenant (noun) – A person who returns as a spirit after death: a ghost, undead being, or a corpse reanimated by supernatural powers.
