This month I have only one streaming selection for you. It’s available on Amazon Prime. When I first heard about Daisy Jones & The Six, I was intrigued. I’ve watched other movies/miniseries about fictional rock bands or performers. Eddie and the Cruisers starring Michael Paré is one of my favorites along with Spinal Tap, Stillwater (Almost Famous), The Wonders (That Thing You Do), and The Blues Brothers Band.
Daisy Jones & The Six stars Riley Keough as Daisy, Sam Claflin (Billy Dunne), Suki Waterhouse (Karen Sirko), Camila Morrone (Camila Alverez Dunne), Will Harrison (Grahame Dunne), Sebastian Chacon (Warren Rhodes), Josh Whitehouse (Eddie Roundtree), Nabiyah Be (Simone), Timothy Olyphant (Rod Reyes, and Tom wright as Teddy Price.
Presented as a series of interviews and flashbacks with band members, their friends, and family members, you know the band isn’t going to last, but you are immediately hooked because you’re not sure how its end will come.
The Six are a band of friends from Pittsburgh in the 70s who immediately lose a member, but The Six never becomes The Five. They soldier on with the name. Billy, the talented lead singer, guitarist, and songwriter is the driving force of the band, but the first taste of success sends him over the edge into the stereotypical sex, drugs, and rock and roll lifestyle which threatens to ruin their big chance. After getting clean and sober he wants no part of the band, but it’s not something he can walk away from. The problem is, he’s burned a lot of bridges. Producer Teddy Price offers Billy and the band a way back - an incredibly talented loose cannon named Daisy Jones.
Sparks fly between Daisy and Billy as she changes the dynamics of the band and their sound. It’s oil and water with an explosive chemistry that’s magic. Daisy and Billy are two halves of the same coin, but it’s not that simple. Billy has his own vision for the band. He also adores his wife and daughter.
Daisy and Billy have a connection They are their own worst enemies and soulmates. No spoiler alerts, but their story along with the stories of their bandmates, friends, and families are unique. There are no pat endings it’s what makes this work.
Riley Keough is an actress, singer/songwriter who also happens to be the granddaughter of Elvis and Priscilla Presley. She’s the daughter of Lisa Marie Presley and musician Danny Keough. Coming from such a talented and storied family, Keough must feel considerable pressure to excel, and she does not disappoint. Her vocals are strong, and her acting is spot-on. Daisy, as portrayed by Keough, is tough as nails on the outside, but scared and vulnerable. She can seem uncaring and selfish, but then suddenly she does something endearing. Part of that is excellent writing and direction, but Keough brings something special to the role. Her stage performance is reminiscent of Fleetwood Mac’s Stevie Nicks without being a deliberate copy.
I don’t know if there is anywhere to go with this story for a second season, but I don’t know if I’m ready to be done with Daisy, Billy, and the other members of The Six.
