We hope you enjoyed the February 2022 issue of This Awful Awesome Life. Many thanks to Lilly Kauffman, Orlando Bartro, and Patricia Petrusik for their contributions to the issue.
February was a “life happens” moment for me… a very long moment. A leak in my basement revealed the need to replace all the terracotta sewer pipes running under my basement and through my back yard. Yikes! My month was filled with clean up crews, insurance adjustors, plumbers, jackhammers, and searching for a contractor to put my “Humpty Dumpty” basement together again. So, this month’s issue is a little later than I’d like, but I promise it’s filled with interesting and entertaining articles and worth the wait.
This month is Women’s History Month and most of us will be celebrating St. Patrick’s Day. Our theme for March is storytelling, and I’m excited to share how our talented writers have interpreted it.
We have a new poem by Rachel Ann Bovier. Lilly Kauffman shares her experience “Just doing it” when she accepted a temporary work assignment with a major sports clothing chain here in Pittsburgh, and Orlando Bartro discusses the works of the playwright, Carlos Goldoni.
Linda Cahill is back rested and refreshed from her Florida vacation with delicious recipes from Pampered Chef and this month I used our vegetable of the month, leeks, to make a traditional Irish dish, Colcannon.
In honor of Women’s History Month, we are celebrating women past, present, and future who through their courage and determination have changed or will help change the world in positive ways.
In keeping with our storytelling theme (and Women’s History Month) we are also celebrating storytellers and the art of storytelling. I have written five short stories from the writing prompt, “She wore the green sweater,” to demonstrate five different ways a single prompt can be interpreted by one person. Subscribers to the magazine will be able to email me their vote on their favorite story. If you haven’t subscribed, it’s free and easy to do on our website. We don’t share your information and we only notify you when each issue comes out. We encourage everyone to comment on or Facebook page when we post each story.
This month I reviewed Short Stories by Latin American Women: The Magic and the Real edited by Celia Correas de Zapata. I was impressed with the diversity of theme and the talented group of authors selected from 14 Latin American countries.
This month’s quiz features famous works of art and the stories associated with them. Our streaming for march also explores the link between words and pictures.
We have reading recommendations for kids and adults in accordance with Women’s History Month, St. Patrick’s Day, and our storytelling theme.
Samantha Sayers has been missing since she disappeared on August 1, 2018, after a day of solo hiking at Vesper Peak near Seattle, Washington. Sam grew up in the Erie, Pennsylvania area where her parents Ron and Lisa still live. Her family is exploring all avenues of inquiry to find and bring her home. In the face of such an enormous challenge, they have chosen hope. Please keep sending positive thoughts to Sam and her family. As promised, we will be displaying a yellow ribbon for Sam on the opening page of each issue of This Awful Awesome Life until she is home.
If you are a person of faith, please pray for her safe return to her family. Because we are an online publication, we can update this article with any news. We will also post information on our Facebook page. Thank you!
