Finding Your Reason for the Season by Fran Joyce

Not everyone celebrates Hanukkah, Christmas, or Kwanzaa. If you are one of these people, you may feel uncomfortable during the holidays. Fear not, December is a month full of wonderful events to celebrate  in addition to your preferred holiday or in place of a specific holiday.

The important thing about December should be celebrating peace and goodwill toward all people. It’s an excellent time to help people who are food insecure, struggling to find shelter and warm clothing, or just having a hard time making ends meet. A little kindness goes a long way. Look through your closets and dressers and see if you have an extra pair of gloves, shoes, boots, warm socks, sweats, winter scarves, coats, blankets, comforters, or jeans you can donate.

Do you have some costume jewelry you no longer wear or a belt that’s too tight or too loose. How about those paperbacks you read and loved, but have no desire to read again or those games the kids never play? Items like these can make excellent gifts for people on tight budgets trying to buy gifts for their loved ones.

Go through your pantry and see if you have any extra food items for the local food drive.

All these small things might not seem like much, but someone in need will appreciate them. As an added bonus you’ll be making room for a few new items. Tis the season.
