November 2022 What's in a Word? by Fran Joyce
This month, I have a selection of words to help you embrace the falling leaves and falling temperatures and appreciate the beauty of life among the chaos we sometimes create when we try to overschedule ourselves going into the holiday season.
I even found words that make drizzling rain sound beautiful.
The country of origin, part of speech, and a pronunciation guide are included for each word. Enjoy!
Ataraxia (n.) at-uh-rak-see-uh (origin: Greek) – A state of freedom from anxiety and emotional disturbance; an untroubled or tranquil mind.
Apricity (n.) a-PRIS-i-tee (origin: Latin) – The warmth of the sun in winter.
Retrouvailles (n.) ruh-troov-eye ( origin: French) – The happy feeling you get when you see someone again after a long period of being apart.
Sirimiri (n.) si-ri-mi-ri (origin: Spanish) – A fine drizzle of rain that’s stronger than a mist, but not a rain shower.
Rimjhim (n.) rim-jhim (origin: Sanskrit) – The delicate sound made by a light drizzle of rain.
Elysian (adj.) uh-li-zee-uhn (origin: Greek) – Peaceful and perfect; divinely inspired; something that’s beautiful or creative.
Mångata (n.) moon-gah-ta (origin: Swedish) – The glimmering road-like reflection of the moon on the water.
Koi no yokan (n.) koy-noh-yo-kin (origin: Japanese) – A premonition of love you get when you see someone for the first time, and you somehow know you could fall in love with them one day.
Flawsome (adj.) flaw-suhm ( The origin of this word is pretty cool – it’s a word created by Supermodel, Tyra Banks on America’s Next Top Model) Banks is referring to the ability some people have to embrace their imperfections, quirks, or flaws, while still realizing they are a perfectly imperfect person who is awesome.
Rame (adj.) raim (origin: Balinese) – Something that is both joyful and chaotic at the same time. It’s a word that perfectly describes life and especially life around the holiday season.
