November 2021 Reading Recommendations for Kids

Fall and the coming of winter can mean more time indoors – perfect for reading and learning new things.

This month we’re recommending books about fall, friendship, other cultures, and celebrations as well as Thanksgiving.

We are also featuring books about Native American legends and history.

It’s a big, beautiful world filled with interesting people and their unique cultures that your kids will enjoy exploring.

The Scarecrow’s Hat by Ken Brown – Chicken likes Scarecrow’s hat and Scarecrow would gladly trade his hat for a comfortable walking stick to rest his arms on. Chicken doesn’t have a stick, but she knows someone who does. Kids will enjoy this funny tale about bartering and friendship. For ages 2-10

Let’s Celebrate Five Days of Diwali by Ajanta Chakraborty – Maya and Neel, two Indian American children travel to India to visit their aunt and learn about Diwali the Indian Festival of Lights. For ages 3-7

In November by Cynthia Rylant – In November, the animals are bust preparing for winter and people are taking the time to stop and be thankful for the fall harvest and their many blessings. For ages 4-7

How the Stars Fell into the Sky; A Navajo Legend by Jerrie Oughton – This retelling of a Navajo legend explains how First Woman tries to write the laws of the land in the sky with the stars, but she is thwarted by mischievous Coyote. For ages 4-7

The Leaf Thief by Alice Hemming – Squirrel loves to count the leaves on his tree, but the leaves have started to go missing. Can Squirrel and his best friend Bird find the leaf thief, or will they discover there’s another reason his leaves are missing. A cute story about change and the anxiety kids can feel when things are changing and how to help them understand the concept of change. For ages 4-8

How to Catch a Turkey by Adam Wallace – There’s a turkey loose in the school right before Thanksgiving and the students must catch it so their Thanksgiving pageant can go on. The students use STEAM concepts to safely trap the turkey and make sure it doesn’t end up on someone’s dinner table. For ages 4-10

Calendar Mysteries #11: November Night by Ron Roy – The Twins new neighbors are up to something. They built a big fence around the backyard and put up a big tent with a dog guarding it. Can the Twins solve the mystery before Thanksgiving? For ages 6-9

The Boy, the Mole, the Fox, and the Horse by Charlie Mackesy – This modern fable is the story of an unlikely friendship between the four characters and how they learn about kindness, hope, friendship and tackle universal life lessons together. For ages 12 -adult
