Movember Streaming by Fran Joyce

Movember is such a brilliant way to raise funds and awareness for men’s health issues, I decided to make this month’s streaming article about leading men with mustaches and “bro” movies. When you think of men with mustaches, who comes to mind? Are you a Clark Gable, David Niven, Robert Redford, Burt Reynolds, Billy Dee Williams, Richard Roundtree, Tom Selleck or Sam Elliott fan?

The Mustache Rules:

Clark Gable – Gable was an American actor. He became known as “The King of Hollywood.” During his 37-year career, he made over 60 films. He won the Academy Award for Best Actor for the film, It Happened One Night. He was also nominated for his roles in Gone with the Wind and Mutiny on the Bounty.

David Niven – Niven was a British actor known for his charm, wit, and ability to make the people he met feel special and valued. He made over 100 films and won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his performance as Major Pollock in Separate Tables. He received acclaim for the films, Around the World in 80 Days, The Pink Panther, and Casino Royale (1967).

Robert Redford – Redford is an American actor and director. He is also one of the founders of the Sundance Film Festival. He has won two Academy Awards, a British Academy Film Award, two Golden Globe Awards, the Cecil B. DeMille Award, and the Presidential Medal of Freedom. He was also named one of the most influential people in the world by Time magazine in 2014. His best-known films include Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Jeremiah Johnson, The Sting, The Way We Were, All the President’s Men, Ordinary People (directorial debut), and Out of Africa.

Burt Reynolds – Reynolds was an American actor, director, and producer. He started his career in television in series such as Gunsmoke, Hawk, and Dan August. His best-known films are Deliverance, The Longest Yard, Smokey and the Bandit (I and II), Semi-Tough, The End, The Cannonball Run, and the animated Don Bluth film, All Dogs Go to Heaven. Reynold’s performance in Boogie Nights received critical acclaim and he won a Golden Globe Award, a BAFTA Award, and an Academy Award Nomination for Best Supporting Actor.

Billy Dee Williams – During his over 60-year career, Williams has appeared in 70 films. Though he is best known for his role as General Lando Calrissian in the Star Wars franchise, he received critical acclaim for his roles in Lady Sings the Blues, Mahogany, and Nighthawk. He also starred in the popular movies Batman and The Lego Batman Movie. He earned an Emmy nomination for his portrayal of Gale Sayers in the ABC Movie of the Week, Brian’s Song.

Richard Roundtree – Roundtree is best known for his portrayal of private detective, John Shaft in the 1971 film Shaft and its four sequels. During his 60-year career, he’s appeared in over 150 TV shows and movies.

Tom Selleck – Selleck’s role as Lance White, the private investigator who could do no wrong and bane to Rockford’s (James Garner) life in The Rockford Files got him Donald P. Belisarius cast him as Thomas Magnum in the hit TV show Magnum PI. Selleck was offered the role as Indiana Jones, but the show’s producers would not release him for other projects. He currently stars in Blue Bloods on CBS. His most popular films are Three Men and a Baby, Three Men and a Little Lady, Runaway, Quigley Down Under, The Jesses Stone Franchise (based on the books of Robert B. Parker), Myra Breckinridge, The Shadow Riders, and In and Out.

Sam Elliot – Elliott is an American actor and voice actor known for his deep voice, lanky frame, and signature mustache. He started out in minor roles in TV and film. He appeared in The Shadow Riders with Tom Selleck. His breakthrough film was Lifeguard. He also starred on several film adaptations of Louis L’Amour books, Gettysburg, Tombstone, We Were Soldiers, and Ghost Rider. He currently stars in the Netflix series The Ranch. Elliott received critical acclaim and an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his role in A Star is Born.

Eddie Murphy – Murphy rose to fame on Saturday Night Live from 1980-1984. He’s starred in popular films such as 48 Hours, Trading Places, Beverly Hills Cop, Coming to America, The Nutty Professor, Dreamgirls, Mulan, and the Shrek franchise.

Bro Movies:

The Hangover starring Bradley Cooper, Zach Galifianakis, Ed Helms, Ken Jeong, and Justin Bartha is one of the ultimate Bro movies of all time. If you missed this “day after the bachelor party” flick or just want to watch it again, it’s currently streaming on HBO Max if you are a subscriber.

Ice Station Zebra starring Rock Hudson, Ernest Borgnine, and Patrick McGoohan gets a quick mention because there are no women in the movie. A US submarine is sent to recover a Soviet satellite in the frigid cold of the North Pole during the Cold War. What could possibly go wrong? It’s available to stream on HBO Max if you are a subscriber and you can watch on You Tube, Google Play Movies & TV, Apple TV, Vudu, or Amazon Prime Video from $2.99. Enjoy this clip:

Anchorman starring Will Farrell, Paul Rudd, David Koechner, and Christina Applegate puts the guys against the girl with hilarious results. It’s available for streaming on You Tube, Google Play Movies & TV, Vudu, or Amazon Prime Video from $2.99 and Apple TV from $3.99.

Ocean’s Eleven stars George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Julia Roberts, and a cast of other guys including Bernie Mac, Andy Garcia, and Scott Caan. It’s the slickest casino robbery you’ve ever seen. Ocean’s Eleven is available to stream on HBO Max with a subscription, and you can watch it on You Tube, Google Play Movies & TV, Apple TV, Vudu, or Amazon Prime Video for $3.99.

Planes, Trains, and Automobiles (one of my favorite movies) stars John Candy (with a mustache) and Steve Martin as accidental traveling companions trying to get home for Thanksgiving. Candy’s character is infuriating and endearing as only Candy could be. It’s available for streaming on You Tube, Google Play Movies & TV, Vudu, or Amazon Prime Video from $2.99 and Apple TV from $3.99.
