April 2020 Book Recommendations for Sheltering in Place

With almost everyone at home and likely to be a home during April, now is a great time to catch up on your reading. At least that’s what I thought, but I must confess I’m having a little trouble escaping into a book. I don’t want to read about sickness, death or lost love right now and these are topics found somewhere in most books.

The challenge for this month is to find books that are funny and entertaining. There might be sickness, death or infidelity somewhere in the pages, but how it’s dealt with can be a positive lesson right now. Here are my recommendations:

The Library at the Edge of the World: A Novel (Finfarran Peninsula Book 1) by Felicity Hayes-McCoy – Hanna Casey is back home in Lissbeg, Ireland after the break up of her marriage. Her teenage daughter has gone traveling, so Hanna is left to start over on her own. She settles in as the local librarian and moves into the spare bedroom of her mother’s retirement cottage while repairing the decrepit cottage left to her by her great aunt. Her plans are threatened by the possible closing of the library. As she fights to save the library, Hanna learns the importance of coming home.

The Bad Mothers' Book Club by Keris Stainton -Since moving to the Liverpudlian seaside after her husband's transfer Emma has been struggling to fit in. She thinks her luck is about to change after she’s invited to join a prestigious mother’s book club, but the women aren’t what they seem and after she accidentally spills red wine on a white carpet, she’s out of the club. Emma starts her own book club – for the “bad moms” who just want to drink wine and share stories. Will the ladies of Liverpudlian accept the new group or will there be consequences?

My Best Mistake (My Best Series Book 1) by Carole Wolfe – Tasha Gerome is a single mother of twins with a pesky ex and a meddling mother who wants her back on the dating scene. And, she just might be sued by a famous doctor. Tasha is trying to cope with a healthy dose of snark and humor, but not everyone appreciate her sense of humor. Can she laugh her way through this latest round of setbacks and find true love?

Well Hung Over in Vegas by Kimberly Fox – When Dahlia wakes up in a Vegas hotel next to a naked stranger with a wedding ring on her finger, she doesn’t think it can get any worse. When she finds out the stranger is actually her new boss Tyler and neither of them has any memory of the night before, she realizes it can and will get worse. Join the fun as Dahlia and Tyler race around Vegas trying to piece together what happened in Vegas.

Lucy's Last Straw by Debbie Viggiano – After 25 years, Lucy is fed up with her husband Leo leaving toothpaste in the sink and obsessing over his 401K. Just when she thinks he’ll never change, Leo announces he wants to renovate a decrepit cottage and make a fresh start with Lucy. Lucy suspects Leo will soon tire of his new project and it will fall to her, but does she really mind when the contractor is so handsome and seems to hang on her every word? Can Lucy and Leo keep it together or will the mid-life crazies get the best of them?

Has Anyone Seen My Sex Life? by Kristen Bailey – Meg and Dan Morton love their children and their busy life, but once in a while it would be nice to spend the morning in bed enjoying a little romance. Dan’s running the family business, but he had other dreams for his career. The reappearance of his globetrotting brother Stu only serves to remind Meg and Dan what they are missing. Can they figure out how to have it all or at least a little romance?

If You Ask Me: (And of Course You Won't) by Betty White – Betty White shares the secrets of her successful career and her marriage to Allen Ludden. It’s easy to see why White is considered a Hollywood icon and a national treasure by her fans.

That Bear Ate My Pants: A Comedy Memoir... with Teeth and Claws! (Adventure without End Book 1)

by Tony James Slater – Enjoy Slater’s funny memoir about his time volunteering at an animal refuge in Ecuador. How do you 'look after' something that’s trying to kill you and eat you? How do you ask someone out on a date when you don’t speak the language and you smell like a wild animal? From big cats to spiders and crocodiles, Slater has a funny and heart warming story about all the animals he encountered.

You Might be a Crazy Cat Lady if by Janet Vormittag – funny short stories about the cats who have enriched the life of the author. From the snugly cuddlers to the cheeky independents – cats make us happy and keep us amused.

Dog Songs by Mary Oliver – Oliver celebrates the dogs she has had in verse. She mixes the everyday moments with her dogs with the joys of companionship and the bittersweet aging of our pets.
